Copyediting

With a completed draft, a copyedit can include all or some of the following, depending upon how clean the draft is:

  • smooth transitions or help restructure sentences to improve readability
  • suggest additions and deletions at the sentence and paragraph level
  • query any conflicting statements, discrepancies, or places where the text may be unclear or confusing
  • correct faulty spelling, grammar, and punctuation
  • ensure consistency in spelling, hyphenation, numerals, fonts, and capitalization; and parallelism of headings
  • correct incorrect word usage
  • eliminate wordiness, triteness, or redundancies
  • note if permissions are needed
  • check and verify cross-references
  • prepare a style sheet listing particular spellings, or stylistic preferences
  • code a manuscript for typesetting/design
